La noche de febrero de 1917 en que las hordas del pueblo tomaron Petrogrado, Miguel tuvo que buscar refugio en la casa de una amiga. Allí permanecería mientras el pueblo tomaba el palacio de Invierno, se organizaba el Soviet y el zar intentaba llegar en tren desde un cuartel militar al palacio donde se refugiaba su familia. Ese viaje en tren, de más de cuarenta horas, que dejaba el gobierno en vilo, fue su perdición, pues el vacío de poder hizo que Petrogrado y Rusia entera se perdieran para siempre en el nuevo régimen comunista. Pero Miguel quería que se convocase una Asamblea Constituyente aunque, tras numerosas reuniones del Soviet, finalmente nunca fue nombrado zar. Miguel Romanov podía haber cambiado la historia de Rusia, convirtiéndose en el primer zar constitucional, y haber evitado el terrible régimen de Stalin, que ya presagiaba la tragedia rusa de ayer y de hoy.
